The disastrous day at the icy lake was just the beginning of their troubles! Jack, Eleanor, and Sylvia each find themselves trapped beneath the surface of difficult circumstances and decisions. Eleanor, who longs to be friends with her sister, finds that they are growing more and more distant. But then a calamitous event stops Sylvia dead in her tracks! The bitter jealousy that has had such a hold on her gives way to humility, forgiveness, and loving sacrifice.

Trapped Beneath the Surface Imagine two sisters. They are unlike most sisters you may know. They do not live in a traditional family, with both parents. You won’t find them sitting around their fireplace reading together, or running around the yard in a game of hide-and-go-seek. In fact, there is very little love and togetherness in their relationship. This describes the relationship of Eleanor and Sylvia Atley. These two sisters were torn apart by their mother’s death. Trapped Beneath the Surface picks up with their lives shortly after their mother’s death, which finds the two girls equally alone. However, things begin to change as Eleanor, the youngest, discovers Christ and begins to rely on Him. The story shows Eleanor’s faith as it grows and matures, as well as her response to Sylvia, who remains cold hearted and disillusioned with life. Another character, the young sailor Jack Forrester, is also portrayed as a friend of the two girls and a new follower of Christ. Jack wants to make his intentions known to Sylvia—but he has a serious problem. He knows that Sylvia has not chosen Christ and they cannot marry, and thus he must go to sea, finding there both danger and loneliness. Many readers may grow weary of the same old spiritual stories where the character turns to Christianity and everything is perfect and their lives are forever happy. This is not that story, and many Christians will appreciate the fact that the characters, even after turning towards Christ, do not have perfect lives. They still struggle with sin, loneliness, fear, and the temptation that comes along with it. For instance, Jack seriously struggles with his decision to follow Christ or to follow Sylvia—wondering at times if it really is worth it. Eleanor also deals with her own struggles after accepting Christ. Her life, too, is filled with decisions as she tries to forgive her sister but keeps finding herself at odds with Sylvia and unable to control the anger she feels at times. Trapped Beneath the Surface is a great story that explains the spiritual growth of several types of characters—the non Christian who becomes a Christian, the new Christian, and the Christian who has been walking with the Lord for some time. Each of these characters demonstrates in a unique way that will encourage the reader’s own faith that “to me to live is Christ!” This is a story of how sorrow can leave us completely broken, with two choices. We can become bitter and angry, or we can find joy in Christ—in and despite our troubles. - Emily
