Struck By Lightning
“Up and doing, little Christian,— Up and doing while ’tis day: Do the work the Master gives you Do not loiter by the way.” This is the little verse that Struck by Lightning starts with. Why this verse, the reader may ask at first? The reason soon becomes apparent. Struck by Lightning is the story of Katie Lawrence. Katie is struggling with managing her time. Like many young girls, her mother gives her a task, and though she means well, she forgets it, or puts it off until it is too late to do other things. However, she is soon taught a valuable lesson. In the story, disaster happens when she was supposed to be doing a task that her mother gave her. Instead of fulfilling her responsibilities first, Katie chooses fun first. This results in a dangerous consequence for herself. Meanwhile, across the town, Granny Hale, an elderly local lady, lives alone, having lost her sight since an illness caused by tragedy years before. Her son Tom had left home years ago, and many had lost hope and presumed him dead. Yet Granny Hale remains hopeful that her son will return to her. Tom does return, and is faced with a life changing decision in his faith. Struck by Lightning is a great book for young readers because it takes an issue that many children and young people struggle with. While it is not a sin to have fun, it is a sin to shirk one’s responsibilities and to put off doing what you are supposed to do first. This is something many young people deal with. While their hearts are in the right place, and they mean well, they are overwhelmed by everything else they could be doing and often just simply forget, like Katie. Another theme of the book involves respect of family and true life-changing faith in Jesus Christ. Thus, the lessons learned by Katie and Tom should be ones that every child should learn—and there is no better way that by reading Struck by Lightning!
